PRESS RELEASE

SIB Launching of Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) Report

For immediate release

December 12, 2007 – The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is pleased to announce the launch of the Multiple Indicators Cluster Survey (MICS) Report at the Radisson Fort George Hotel on 14th December, 2007.

The MICS, conducted in 2006, is used to assess progress of women and children in Belize in the areas of health, education and child development.  The survey was conducted by the Central Statistical Office with funding and technical assistance from UNICEF.

The survey’s primary objectives were to provide up-to-date information for assessing the situation of children and women in Belize and to furnish data needed for monitoring progress toward goals established in the Millennium Declaration and the Plan of Action of A World Fit For Children (WFFC). It also contributes to the improvement of data and monitoring systems in Belize and to strengthen technical expertise in the design, implementation, and analysis of such systems.

The MICS indicators are needed to develop goals and evaluate progress in human development, particularly situations that are most relevant and pressing to both women and children. Some of these situations include child development, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, sexual behaviour and child protection.
