For the ninth consecutive month, imports declined with total expenditure amounting to $119.1mn, an 11.8% fall off when compared to the same month of 2008. On the other hand, for the second month, domestic export earnings continued its upward trend growing by 8.5% over the same period of 2008.

The unemployment rate stood at 12.6% in September of 2009.

After out-performing many countries in 2008 and growing by 3.6 percent, the Belizean economy could no longer stave off the effects from the global downturn and contracted for the first two quarters in 2009.

After declines for three consecutive quarters, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) shows that the overall price level rose by 0.8 percent between May and August 2009.

Press Release - Launching of a New Statutory Body

July 2, 2007 The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) proudly announces its launching at ceremonies to be held on July 3rd, 2007 at the Radisson Fort George Hotel.	SIB replaced the Central Statistical Office on April 1st, 2007 as the national statistical agency of Belize.
	This new statutory body, which comes under the Ministry of National Development, is governed by a board of directors with representation from government and non-government sectors. The primary functions of the SIB are to collect, compile, extract, analyze and release official statistics pertaining to the demographic, social, environmental, economic and general activities and conditions of Belize on an impartial basis and in accordance with professional standards and ethics. According to SIB Director General, Glenn Avilez, “reliable, accurate statistics is of utmost importance to all our stakeholders, it is therefore very timely that our status has changed. SIB is committed to improve on methods of efficiently and effectively collecting data and providing statistical information both locally and internationally.”
The SIB is headquartered in Belmopan and maintains offices in Belize City and all towns, excluding Benque Viejo Del Carmen and San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
